September is observed as National Preparedness Month, bringing awareness to the importance of being prepared in case of an extreme weather event.

What is National Preparedness Month?

The month of September is recognized as National Preparedness Month, a month of observance to acknowledge the importance of being prepared for emergency disasters. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issues a Ready Campaign each year that is committed to getting preparedness information to groups and communities that live in underserved areas.

2023 Ready Campaign: “Take Control in 1,2,3”

FEMA’s Ready Campaign for this year is “Take Control in 1,2,3”—which focuses on preparing older adults for emergency disasters, specifically elderly groups living in communities that are disproportionately impacted. Older adults, especially those that live alone, are low-income, have a disability, or live in rural areas, can face greater risks when it comes to weather emergencies.
